The Fallacy of Guilt

What then…should you do if you make a mistake? There are many productive actions that you can take, other than feeling guilty. To name a few, you can take responsibility for what you have done, ask for forgiveness, and offer to make amends. Rather than blaming yourself and ruminating over a long list of “if only” statements, you can accept what has happened and stop fighting “what is.”

Regardless of how you choose to respond, be sure to learn from your experience. It is the learning, not the guilt, that will keep you from repeating your mistakes. It’s also important to forgive yourself. If this is difficult for you, try giving yourself the same compassion and understanding that you’d give to a friend who made a decision with a negative consequence. It is only through forgiveness and growth that we can use our mistakes to expand our experience in a positive way.
